Even before the pandemic pushed so much of life onto our screens, remote options were already becoming part of how we work and connect with each other. That change has also extended to therapy, and for good reason. Meeting with a therapist online opens up access in ways that weren’t possible before. You’re no longer limited to providers within driving distance, which means you can look for someone whose qualifications or approach actually fit what you need, rather than settling for whoever happens to be nearby. Online therapy also allows those who are uncomfortable leaving their homes, fear driving, feel uncomfortable in crowds or public transportation to access treatment.

Still, it’s normal to feel a little unsure about online sessions. Without the drive to an office or the ritual of sitting in a waiting room, therapy can start to feel like just another video call squeezed between meetings. But with a few intentional adjustments, you can make online therapy feel just as grounding and effective as sitting across from your therapist in person.

Set Up a Space That Feels Like Yours

You don’t need a dedicated home office for this to work. What matters more is finding a spot where you feel at ease, somewhere that isn’t your desk if your desk feels too much like work. Good lighting makes a real difference. So does having a few small comforts nearby: a candle, a cup of tea, a blanket, or a chair you enjoy sitting in. The goal is a little pocket of your home that feels less like a workstation and more like a space where you can be open and reflective. A steady internet connection matters too, since a laggy or glitchy call can pull you out of the moment and make it harder to stay present.

Protect Your Privacy

Just as you would in an in-person office, it helps to have privacy before, during, and after your session. Give yourself permission to be alone, minimize distractions, and make sure you’re somewhere your conversation won’t be overheard. That sense of safety allows you to speak more freely and get more out of the time you’ve set aside.

Give Yourself Time Before and After

It’s tempting to run an errand or log straight into your session, but that kind of rush rarely sets you up well. Taking a few minutes beforehand to sit quietly and gather your thoughts can do a lot of the same work that a commute used to do. This helps you shift out of whatever you were doing before and into a headspace that’s ready to engage.

The same is true on the other end. Closing your laptop and immediately diving back into your day doesn’t give your mind a chance to process what came up. Try setting aside ten or fifteen minutes afterward for something quiet, like deep breathing, journaling, or simply sitting with your thoughts for a bit. That small buffer helps you absorb the session instead of rushing past it.

Show Up Consistently

There will be weeks when life feels busy, or when nothing in particular feels urgent enough to bring up. It’s easy to assume that means the session won’t be worth much, but some of the most meaningful therapy work happens in the sessions that don’t feel especially dramatic. Protecting that hour, even when things seem calm, keeps the process moving and gives you room to notice things you might otherwise miss.

Are You Ready to Try Online Therapy?

Online therapy isn’t a lesser version of in-person work. With the right setup and a bit of intention, it can offer the same depth and connection while fitting more naturally into your life. If you’re curious whether online therapy sessions might be a good fit for you, schedule a consultation with me soon, and we can talk about what options are available.
